Jack Whitham

I have recently completed my PhD in Computer Science (publications), and I am now working as a research associate at the Department of Computer Science at the University of York. I am working on two embedded real-time systems research projects, EMUCO and JEOPARD. Both are funded by the European Union and bring together leading industry and academic partners from throughout Europe.

• Software

  • udg.py - Python module that generates uDrawGraph files from Python data structures. Useful for debugging graph algorithms.
  • epsfixup.py - Python program that modifies an EPS image file so that it will be processed with high quality compression by the PDF distiller (about this).
  • Extensions and patches for Simplescalar, the CPU simulator. I'm going to keep these online, but I suggest using M5 instead of Simplescalar.
  • Final year MEng project, software and project report.
  • em180, an emulator for the Z180/64180 microprocessor.
  • A fixed point mathematics library for the Z180/64180.

• Games - Articles and Tools

  • Article on security hardening for Source Engine games on Steam.
  • Sound Troll locks your Windows recording input to a specified device, preventing other programs changing it. Useful if you have two sound cards.
  • SOCKSified version of SDL_net, from the days before Freecap.

• Games - Written or Modified by Me

  • Nethack Valentine's Day 2004 Special - mod for Nethack.
  • Snowplough - mod for Digger.
  • LightYears - a little strategy game.

• Linux and Free Software

  • Article about using debootstrap on non-Debian systems. Useful for upgrading old Linux systems to Debian.

• Other Things

  • My current PGP key. There is also a version that is signed with the old key.
  • Interested in unique board games? randomviolence is made by a friend of mine. It's deathmatch in turn-based board game form.
  • The missing Magrathea scene, which was originally broadcast as part of the Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio series (episode 3), but was then removed from all commercially published tape and CD versions of the series.
